Homeland (TV Series 2011– )

I don't recall ever reviewing a television series. Not that I recall much. But, dude. It's about time.

Homeland is a miracle. Okay, okay, not really. Homeland is an escape. I literally feel like I am investigating the countries highest officials to save the world from terrorists! (In the form of Claire Danes running around having sex with everyone she works with) It's a dream.

Season 1 detailed the struggles of being a redhead held captive in a middle eastern country. Season 2, Claire's outfits become scantily clad (and why the side purse?). I am hooked on this show. Ms. Danes looks crazy thin and acts completely unstable, while mysteriously holding down a high ranking/high paying power role in the CIA. Ladies, it is possible!

Anywhoo, love love. Check it out.

Playing for Keeps (2012)

Wow, oh wow. Gerard Butler looks like a gorgeous sun kissed bathing suit model in this film!

Thank goodness because it was AWFUL.

Jessica Biel plays his ex(not-sure)-wife whom viewers glare at in wonder the majority of the film. I'm not sure...what exactly I was staring at...Jessica Biel's haggared, horrifically thin appearance or the unrealistic portrayal of her character somehow NOT being attracted to Mr. Butler?? It was fascinatingly not possible in any realistic way. The films plot was seemingly Mr. Butler's struggle of making his way through a variety of famous women (loved seeing Catherine Zeta looking FABU) throwing themselves at him. Apparently, he had previously been an ex-professional soccer player? This film is just bad. There’s not much more to say, except - do not waste your time.

The Avengers (2012)

I'm not the biggest fan of comics but I can enjoy men in tight outfits paired with fighting for the safety of our universe (what's more romantic than that??). I didn't necessary run to theaters to see this film but I strolled. This movie seemed very basic and young. It contained an exorbitant amount of action that even an ADD child would find it hard to keep up (let alone, an ADD adult like myself). Entertaining, why yes but don't we want more out of films these days -or are we already back to the 'Paul Bart: Mall Cop' era? Long story short, not for me (now - or in my teens).

Stars: 1 out of 4 for casting Scarlett Johansson (who looked AMAZEBALLS)

The Five-Year Engagement (2012)

All things must come to an end...or do they? In this interesting new-age twist of the 'ideal relationship' a couple comes together flawlessly and ends up being completely flawed. How does this happen - and, in reality, do they really end up together? Jason Segel and Emily Blunt play the glorious couple just perfectly. They laugh and joke, and play aka "getting weird", leading one to think, "get married already"! After a mess of a sibling and a best friend ending up together we are left wondering, how will things play out? I really enjoyed watching the couple move together...and seemingly grow (just as my [married] parents did), but watching as one falls apart (unnoticed by the other)...cheating inevitably begins. I find it hard to believe that in 'real life' things would work out...or do they? Are couples able to move passed cheating...or choosing another over you? Who knows the answers to these questions which are largely personality specific. Is this a romantic film or an emotional rollercoaster? The answer will depend on your personal point of view...but the guy makes the extra effort in this film...and for whatever its worth city boys, it works. ----- 4 out 5 stars because love is all you need. ----- Theater: UES, Clearview Cinemas, Solo

War Horse (2011)

Boy oh boy! It has been awile! I watch tons of films all weekend long and have been forgetting to update everyone on the best and worst films! Never again (lie). Last weekend, I had to check out some of the films that were up for an Oscar. Being a dog lover (I have a chihuahua), I figured that something to do with a horse MIGHT be bearable. I was right! At first, the movie seemed very boring and slow moving but that is only because this film really develops the characters, along with the relationship between the audience and the main animal character (the horse). I had never watched a film with Jeremy Irvine as the star, but hey, he seemed good (just good). In this film, the horse seems to fulfill almost immediately something that is missing for the little boy...that being said, the bond seems a bit overdone but plays into the horrific moments in the film very well, due to the developed attachments and luck following this horse around. This film is definitely meant to be a family movie in that it blantently shows the (hard to watch) issues that occur during a war as well as how this type of environment gives humans AND (lets not forget) animals little choice between life or death. Apparently, I now know that the bond with an animal can be just as strong (and fulfilling) as a bond with a fellow human - "War Horse" shows us that this bond should NOT be taken lightly (he will re-appear and re-appear just as much as James Bond - hence the "bond" usage, hehe).

My Week with Marilyn (2011)

Since her days on 'Dawson's Creek' I have disliked Michelle Williams. Her lowly semi-attractive character who gets all the boys just didn't do it for me. Even now, with her new "fashionista" title and red-carpet moments - she's just dull. I do however, ADORE with all of my heart and soul the infamous, Marilyn Monroe! She is and was just breathtakingly gorgeous and wonderful. Ms. Monroe is the most amazing and mesmerizing of all of the actresses I can think of to-date. Somehow, it saddens me that 'Michelle Williams' was chosen to play MARILYN MONROE? How did this happen???Was Scarlett too expensive? Where in the world was Amber Heard during auditions? Anyway, Michelle got the part. I watched, listened and fell in love with this Marilyn. I have to mention that it is mostly due to the cinematography, short snapshots and perfect framing of a very slim Ms. Williams portraying the voluptuous Marilyn. In short, it wasn't the best and it wasn't the worst of films. It was like watching a short 'made for television' film on lifetime (without the comfort of your upper eastside apartment).

If you're bored, check it out. If not, stay warm.

50/50 (2011)

I have been taking too many cabs. On my way to work and back, I watch on the little mini cab television as that old guy announces his name repeatedly, along with his views on various major motion picture releases. Days leading up to my viewing of this film, I was listening as this old (annoying) guy told me more times then it's worth mentioning that this is "the film of the year!!!" Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this is definitely not the film of the year (and if it is...we have bigger issues in the U.S. than I already thought we did). This film is sarcastically funny due to Seth Rogen's character (I met him…by the way i.e. very cute). I dig (his) sarcasm even if he plays the same character in all of his movies. The plot is seemingly "what is life like as a 27 yr old nerdy male that is newly diagnosed with (possible terminal) cancer?" Since I am (unfortunately) 27 yrs old as well, and for anyone living in the country - we are all still dating in large cities across this great (example of sarcasm) country! The lifestyle of a late twenty-something single person seems to entail dealing with family, work, dating (or trying to date), friends and taking care of your (almost old) self. I recognized the main character in "50/50" from watching the hit, '500 Days of Summer'. Like most of the ladies that saw this romantic comedy, the thought of seeing another film with the same sexy guy (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), just seemed like a sure thing. Ultimately, this film was a bit dull, with starlets appearing here and there (Angelica Houston), while the entertainment aspect of this film was sort've 'Hollywood' for me - if that makes sense. I'm not sure that I felt connected to any of the characters (except for maybe...trying to think up a plan in order to go back time to ask Seth Rogen out). Anyway, if there isn't anything else to see at the theater it's not THAT big of a waste of $13. Seeing as how I am currently trying to think of a plan to go back in time, I would have rather watched 'The Wire' and had some diner chicken fingers with french fries. Yum! Who's hungry?! 3 out of 5 Stars.

The Tree of Life (2011)

I wanted to see this movie because I was going through a crisis. I felt that life needed explaining. Moving back across the country leaves much to be figured out. How does one not panic when you need a new job, a new boy-friend and a new apartment (not in this order) - all independently?! Anyways, you panic. I decided that starting over at 26 yrs old, wouldn't be as bad as starting over at 30 yrs old. Turns out, its hard no matter what. So, back to the blog at hand, I went to go see Brad Pitt. This film directed by Terrence Malick was raved about by my intellectual friends (so of course, I had to see it). It was a blurred reminiscing about hard times, love and family. The family structure in the 1950's is much like what I imagine to be the 'All American Family' i.e. the children are scared of Dad - and Mom is the example of love. I was truly moved. Did I cry? Yes. But, I always cry. Overall, this is a film that is trying to capture the meaning of life. Not an easy topic. I think that this film comes close to understanding what is unable to be captured visually in this answer that is seemingly unknown - what IS this meaning that we are all in search of...in this adventure that we call life...and what is life, exactly? My recommendation is to be in a reflective mood when going to see this film and if you can, go without your father - and be ready for an experience similar to that of a discovery channel film. 4 out of 5 stars.

Midnight in Paris (2011)

Paris is superb in this film. The romantic strolls, picturesque filming, along with perplexing (wink) verbiage to kill for makes this film a keeper (in the most romantic way possible). Even as a devout Woody Allen fan, it still came as a surprise to me that Owen Wilson could swing such a unique character. Could his lack of diversity be concealed by the amazing shots of one of my most favorite cities in the world (next to NYC, of course)?! Wilson's role as part Woody Allen, part TV Exec and a loyal (hypothetically) fiancé, just fits. He is funny, charismatic and definitely a traditional Woody character but in a 21st century manly way. I enjoyed this film due to its realism, while containing an imaginative plot. How can this be, you may ask? You'll have to check it out. If you are not a Woody fan, you should be. As far as the beautiful and talented, Rachel McAdams, she doesn't play much of a part. Mostly, because we all know of her from "Mean Girls" and she portrays the exact same character in this film. Boring. She plays it well (as usual), however we don't seek her presence like we usually do (whether its her beauty that is alluring or her talent - much like the recently outed 'diva' herself, Scarlett Johansson). McAdams' beauty is diminished by her characters social skills, family and situation. If you are in any way a dreamer, an artist, a Cole Porter/Woody fan - this film is for you. Run, don't walk (cheesy line) and see Woody's latest hit. 4 out of 5 stars (only because 'Annie Hall' can never be remade)!

The Hangover Part II (2011)

I am a HUGE, HUGE Zach Galifianakis fan. HUGE. After doing stand-up in LA at the Upright Citizens Brigade, I adore all things Zacky poo - from his skinny stand-up days to his fat wanna-be Jack Black current persona, he rocks. HOWEVER, does the spin-off to 'The Hangover' compare to its first amazing 'Wedding Crasher'-type film comparison?! Sadly, no. Its a slightly funny - definitely R RATED flick with some surprise moments BUT its almost frame for frame replica-style as an exact copy of the original doesn't work. Short on time or short on material, one can only guess what producers where thinking (or not thinking) but this remake is unfortunately not holding up to the original. Using the same plot (but different 'out-of-nowhere location ie Bangkok'?!), and similar characters minus two important roles the FABULOUS Heather Graham and Rachael Harris (the actress that played Stu's wife) - just doesn't have the same 'HAVE YOU SEEN THE 'THE HANGOVER' YET??!!!' momentum. Without some hilariously crazy women, this version lacked some...relationship spunk. Also, copying a plot and scenes in what seemed like a lazy and uninspired manner really hindered the comedy aspect. There's a good laugh here and there but nothing that memorable. I give this one a 2 out of 5 - Sorry, Zack but I still love you, my little poo, poo.

Bridesmaids (2011)

As a future member of SNL (big smurk), I just adore Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph! They are both so spot-on in their humor and body language - and lets not forget, their dancing!!! This film is ready for its chic-lit audience to dance, drink (legal in theaters?) and have a FAB-U-LOUS time! Similar to the brother flick, "The Hangover" these ladies know how to have a blast of a time but in louboutin heels (Rose Byrne's gorgeous character) and "OH-so-short" dresses (Ms. Wiig). I really enjoyed the realistic plot and Ms. Wiig's very real character as not all big budget films have to be fantasy driven. She's a hard working gal going through hard times...does she make it through? We sure hope so! With the help of friends, new and old, this film is just in time for a wintry-like summer in NYC, along with our roller coaster of an economy everywhere. Grab your crazy, unstable lady friends, or your best gay and go have some laughs! Definitely check out this entertaining, stylish (for) Chi-town based film. 4 out of 5 stars.

The Verdict (1982)

A strong film with a spectular plot. I am in awe with the immense emotion and will that the actors (on both the Defense and Plaintiff) portray. Currently, a much younger actor might have been casted in Paul Newman's place...and what a loss to viewers that more sophiscated dramatic acting isn't chosen over external appearances. Mr. Newman was fantastic. In our 21st century culture of re-doing classics, we can try but we never come close. 5 out of 5 stars.

Blue Valentine (2010)

This movie was probably the worst that I have seen in years. Trashy. A horrible depiction of the poor or struggling. This film much like "Love and Other Drugs" was overly hyped due to the 'celebrities' in the film offering a MUCH better reputation of it than it deserved. I was very excited to see this film going in and even invited a new friend to help celebrate its release. It was filmed like a documentary and offered many scenes out of focus that would have been much better otherwise. Way too many tasteless sex scenes that did not help grow the characters. I never knew them going in - and I never knew them after scenes like the ones mentioned above - nor would I want to know them. It was the most slow moving (for no reason), plotless, loveless, tasteless film - that I have seen. If American audiences are trying to see a documentary type film - please just go watch one. That style for a drama does not work. The only nice thing I can say about this film is that Ryan Gosling has a great agent and knows what characters to choose - talk about typecasting. Regardless, he is talented. Michelle Williams should stick to Dawson's Creek. I walked out of the film. Save your money.

True Grit (2010)

Beautiful still shots, images that take your breath away and a lovely story about fearlessness. Although, a sad tale "True Grit' was a gorgeously directed film. The design and wardrobe were perfection. On to the faults, casting. I am not a fan of Hailee Steinfeld. I really felt as I watched that she was reading a script or was acting in a dramatic play. Matt Damon was fantastic as always and really led audiences to believe that he was a heartless fool and ultimately, a loving friend. This film had action, true passion and a great way of depicting friendship. I say, see it in theaters, true beauty much like true grit must be seen in the dark.

4 out of 5 stars.

Love and Other Drugs (2010)

First of all, I have been a friend to illness at times in my life...and am no stranger to medicine. Especially, since I have dated an array of various types of doctors - not relevant. Nonetheless, medicine effects peoples lives - some more than others. This film ties medicine, sickness and work ethic together and somehow trys to answer the age-old question of, 'how does one have it all (make money, make time, be smart, fall in love, learn, feel...etc.)'? And, of course, fails. I don't believe that anyone, especially a hollywood film holds the answer to any of lives questions - especially not this one. Although, Anne Hathaway (not a fan) does an excellent job portraying her character, something (maybe Jake's acting) falls short. In summary, a poorly done love story (that is VERY well hyped up by the media - and gives the effect that this film is not as badly done as it actually is). I say, wait for video unless you are bored for a film and have already seen, "Conviction". I give it a 2 out of 5 stars.
